Enzymes are extremely efficient, sustainable and natural catalysts. These extraordinary molecules only have one flaw: the high cost of production prevents their application in processes that could benefit from their use. APEXzymes is on a mission to overcome this barrier.
Cost reduction
We have mastered the process of developing optimized platforms and bioprocesses to significantly reduce the cost of enzyme production. Our mission is to unlock new enzyme applications that are currently economically unviable, expanding the use of these molecules to new markets.

Pioneering and innovating
We enable industry to get closer to nature, making processes more sustainable and more productive through molecules that already exist in nature. More than that: with sustainability at its core, APEXzymes is a pioneer in transforming agro-industry by-products into powerful catalysts with high added value in a productive and scalable way.
By obtaining enzymes from low-cost by-products that are abundant in Brazil, we have aligned our production with an important aspect of the circular economy, transforming a waste product into a robust and inexpensive catalyst capable of bringing sustainability to the most diverse processes.
Team
Lucas Miranda
Lucas Miranda holds a Bachelor of Biochemistry degree from the Federal University of Viçosa and a PhD degree in Bioenergy from the State University of Campinas. His specialty focused on process establishment and by-product manipulation puts him on the right foot to manage the operation front and turn our scientific development into innovative products
Lucas Parreiras
Lucas Parreiras holds Honours BSc (Biotechnology Specialist) and MSc (Cell and Molecular Biology) degrees from the University of Toronto and a PhD degree in Bioenergy from the State University of Campinas. His extensive experience in genetic engineering gives him the precise skills to lead the scientific development of the project, reaching unprecedented results in the genetic manipulation of filamentous fungi.
Larissa Viana
Larissa Viana is a chemical engineer graduated from Federal University of Santa Catarina with a master in Advanced Science and Technologies by the French school ESPCI. After two years working with venture building and venture capital focused on biotechnology at Vesper Ventures, she joined APEXzymes to focus on the business development front.
Publicações selecionadas do nosso time
Rational engineering of the Trichoderma reesei RUT-C30 strain into an industrially relevant platform for cellulase production.
Technology
APEXzymes has two complementary specialties in the team: we overcome the current limitations of genetic engineering in filamentous fungi and we are pioneers in the development of scalable, highly-productive processes using alternative, low-cost raw materials. This unique combination of expertise has made it possible to develop a disruptive and proprietary production technology.
Current technology
Our innovation
Our technology is adapted to produce a complex enzyme cocktails using just one fermentation tank.
We have developed a genetic engineering protocol that successfully inserts multiple editions into filamentous fungi. We obtain novel strains, modified to produce the desired enzymes at specific concentrations.
Our process was developed to achieve high productivity. We achieve the same rates as our competitors, with one difference: we use low-cost by-products as raw materials.
Pipeline
Our enzymes can be applied in a wide variety of sectors to improve the use of raw materials, increase productivity in a sustainable way and reduce negative environmental impacts in various processes.
Our first development is focused on the food industry, increasing the efficiency of production processes in a sustainable way, while reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
Biofuels
Cost reduction of sustainable fuels.
Paper and pulp
Better use of raw materials, reduction of industrial challenges and reuse of residues.
Biorefinery
Economical viability of biomass treatment for the production of bioproducts.
